Students studying the major subject “Economics” will acquire basic specialist knowledge, especially of economic theories and methods of analysis, which will enable you to work independently on marked-out problem areas in a scientific way. Here you will learn to analyse economic mechanisms, institutions and governance structures systematically and how to adopt an economic perspective to decision-making structures and processes. In Marburg, particular attention will be paid to the significance of institutions for the national economy and you will be given an overview of the structures on which the decisions of economic actors (in companies or public institutions) are based. You will also learn to develop options for action and decision-making and to reflect upon them and present your own findings in an oral and written form in a way that is tailored to your target group.

The lectures have an international focus and there are lectures in English, which will prepare you for the increasing internationality of professional practice. The integration of a voluntary semester abroad into the course is expressly supported.

Prospects

Graduates will have a command of fundamental economic theories and methods of analysis. The course will qualify you to participate in master’s degree programmes in Economics, as it teaches the necessary basic principles for the subject. It will also qualify you to work in public authorities and non-governmental organisations on a national and international level, in management and political consulting, the media, and the middle management of all corporate sectors.

The teaching and learning activities attach more weight to the learning of thought patterns than to the acquisition of factual knowledge. The major subject will thus give the graduates a solid basis for lifelong learning and enable them to hold their ground in a dynamic corporate environment.

The choice of your major subject will decisively shape your professional qualifications profile. In conjunction with one or two minor subjects, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
