Biographical note ( Draft ) :
Prof. Dr. Albrecht Fuess is a professor of Islamic Studies at Philipps‑Universität Marburg and director within the Centrum für Nah‑ und Mittelost‑Studien (CNMS). He studied History and Islamic Studies at the University of Cologne and the University of Cairo, and earned his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies at Cologne with a dissertation on Mamluk naval history. His academic career includes research fellowships at SOAS (University of London) and the German Institute of Oriental Studies in Beirut, as well as positions at the University of Erfurt. He has been a full professor at Marburg since 2010.
Fuess’ research focuses on Middle Eastern history (13th–17th centuries), the cultural and social history of the Mamluks, Islam in Europe, and contemporary Islamic youth cultures. He has supervised numerous doctoral and master’s theses and co‑organized international workshops and conferences. Currently, he is involved in major interdisciplinary projects including the LOEWE Centre DynaRel, which explores religious diversity and interreligious dynamics in historical and contemporary contexts.

Prof. Fuess’ teaching and research interests bridge classical Islamic history and contemporary religious and cultural studies, contributing significantly to academic discourse on the Middle East and Islam in Europe.
