"Having Twins: Biological Reproduction, Painting, and Early Film”

Abstract: From 1909 onwards, scientists were able to register cells dividing with the motion picture camera. These processes had been
observed earlier with the microscope, but now such dramatic micro instances of growth could be witnessed as moving image events. Heredity was a key theme for the art and media of the era as well as for science, this talk argues. It explores interactions among these spheres through reference to the films of Parisian surgeon Dr. Eugène Doyen and micro-biologist Jean Comandon, as well as to prints and paintings by Mary Cassatt and others. Rather than thinking in terms of the original and its copy, we learn through this study of the primacy of the double in this period, of the perception of the joined condition as the basic state.
