For your semester planning, you have the responsibility, but rest assured, we are here to assist you. We provide information sessions, offer timetables, and make event details available on the online course catalog to support you in organizing your schedule effectively.

Information sessions for semester planning

For planning your first semester, it is essential that you attend the information session organized by the study-dean's office on the first day of the orientation week. We will provide you with the specific dates well in advance. 

You won't be alone in planning the subsequent semesters either. Before each module selection period, we will inform you about the important considerations for the following semester. Organizational information and event dates will be posted on the online black-board in a timely manner.

On this page, you will find sample timetables for the winter semester and the summer semester, which will show you the scheduling of the offered advanced modules. You can customize your own timetable according to your interests, with the help of the module descriptions.

Course catalogue

The course catalogue is a comprehensive list of all the courses and lectures offered at the university for a specific semester or academic year. The catalogue provides detailed information about each course, including the course title, course number, professor's name, time and location of the lectures, and any prerequisites or requirements for enrollment. It serves as a valuable resource to plan your course schedules, select your desired classes, and obtain important information about the content and structure of the courses offered.

The course catalogue for the winter semester can be accessed online in MARVIN from October 1st (only available in German language).

Registration an admission procedures

  • Registration and admission for advanced modules

    The registration for the advanced modules of your degree program will be done through a survey tool in ILIAS (a learning platform, available for all students of th Philipps-University. The access details will be provided to you in due time). It is important to note that there are specific registration periods that you need to adhere to. For the summer semester, the registration period is from March 1st to March 31st of the current year. In July, you will have the opportunity to register for the modules of the winter semester.

    Please keep in mind that this process varies for first-semester students, as they will receive guidance during the information session!

    Admission to the advanced modules
    Approximately one month before the start of the lecture period you will be informed by mail about the module admissions. Module admissions are granted by the module coordinators based on available spots and, in some cases, specific admission criteria for the modules.

  • Admission to Internships

    If you are planning to do your internship in a research laboratory at Philipps University Marburg or the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology, you should directly contact the laboratory of your choice and arrange the details with the head of the lab. If you are considering an internship outside of these institutions, you will need to find a supervisor who is a member of the university's teaching staff. You will also need their approval to ensure that the internship meets the quality criteria of Philipps University.   • Admission to Research projects

    To register for the research project module, you need to contact the lab of your choice and make arrangement directly with the head of the lab.

  • Master´s thesis

    The registration for the MSc thesis is done in writing at the Examination Office for Biology. The criteria for eligibility to undertake the master's thesis can be found in the Study and Examination Regulations.
