Abstract
In historical studies, the Habsburg crownland of Galicia often is regarded as an example for ethnicization or nationalization of a multicultural region. A first glance at women’s politics seems to confirm this impression. Women’s politics that transcended borders of language and ethnicity were inconceivable; the rivalry between nationalism and feminism was perceived as insurmountable.
In the lecture, I will use examples of Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish women’s politics to explore positions, practices and conflicts that arose from the competition between nationalism and feminism. How can broad concepts such as nationalism and feminism be historicized? What does a feminist concept contribute to the analysis of historical conditions?
