Philipps-Universität Marburg Zentrum für Konfliktforschung (ZfK)Dr. Ibrahim Kuran is a postdoctoral researcher in the PoWER (Politicians, Policies, and Wealth Reproduction) project at the University of Marburg, supervised by Prof. Miquel Pellicer and Prof. Eva Wegner, and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and is currently researching wealth bias in tax policymaking in Germany and the United Kingdom. His research interests lie at the intersection of political economy and economic sociology, with particular expertise in distributive politics, clientelism and electoral behavior, universal basic income and welfare policies.
The PoWER project examines how politicians’ social and economic backgrounds shape policies that may favor the wealthy. By analyzing data from 50 democracies (2005–2020) and conducting in-depth case studies in the UK, Germany, Brazil, and South Africa, the project explores how similarities between politicians and economic elites influence policymaking and contribute to wealth reproduction.
Dr. Kuran holds dual PhDs in Economics (2014-2022) and Political Science and International Relations (2011-2020) from Istanbul Medeniyet University and Boğaziçi University respectively, both earned with distinction. His former doctoral project explored Kurdish voting behavior and relational clientelism in Istanbul, and latter doctoral research examined the political economy of universal basic income through innovative Twitter data analysis.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Kuran served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Istanbul Medeniyet University (2023-2025) and held adjunct positions at Boğaziçi University and Fenerbahçe University, where he taught courses in political economy, economic sociology, welfare economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, research methods, investment management, and international negotiation.
