Are you already working with the R programming language on an occasional basis in order to

  • perform data manipulation and follow-up processing steps based on initial raw data?
  • conduct statistical analysis of your research data in a time-efficient way?
  • visualize the datasets derived therefrom in preparation for meaningful publication?

If (at least) one of these points applies, then this course on advanced programming in R could be for you!

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You have an overview of various methods to bring the (big) data you are working with into shape (e.g., by using the popular reshape2 and dplyr packages). Based on that acquired knowledge, you are able to generate publication-quality graphics from only a few lines of code (presentation and practical exercises).
  • You are capable of effectively deploying iteration procedures that go beyond the scope of regular – and very slow! – procedures for loop constructs. In this context, you will have the basic skills for reasonable outsourcing of particular calculation steps on multiple cores (parallelization) and utilizing the extensive connectivity between R and C++ (practical exercises).
  • You are able to boost the performance of your custom functions through reasonable employment of the principle of functional programming (practical exercises).
  • In addition, you can expect to improve your organizational structure and version control habits by using RStudio projects along with fully implemented GitHub functionality (trainer input and practical exercises).

Requirements

Basic knowledge in the usage of R is required. Participants will need a students or staff account of Philipps-Universität Marburg.
