Reading Week at Faculty 03

Implementation
During this week, instructors can offer targeted advising appointments, supervise student working groups or correct student examinations. As part of the courses, reading assignments can also be set for Reading Week, examination dates can be scheduled or excursions can be organized.
Concept & Idea
As part of the further development of the BA and MA degree programs in Department 03, a department-wide Reading Week was introduced. Originally an idea from the English-speaking world, Reading Week brings back a little of the attitude toward study that the German higher education system seemed to abandon with the EU’s Bologna Process.
As an element of independent study, Reading Week is an integral part of the degree program and is intended to help Philipps-Universität Marburg promote the “development of its students into autonomous, critically thinking and reflecting, self-confident and prudent individuals with a broad profile of expertise” (preamble to the guidelines for the development of consecutive degree programs and for teaching at Philipps-Universität Marburg dated 1 October 2009). The aim is to give students the opportunity to deepen or catch up on learning content in self-study, to take advantage of additional courses and to prepare for examinations.
Overall, Reading Week reduces the increasing compression of everyday academic life in the new degree programs and thus improves the academic feasibility of pursing studies. It provides scope for autonomous educational decisions and thus promotes independent self-study beyond the now more school-based timetable.
