Institution

The central task of the Research Center Deutscher Sprachatlas is researching the dialects, substandard varieties and regional languages of the German language. To this end, the institute offers comprehensive research opportunities to the scholarly and scientific community. These include extensive collections and documentation (research materials) – most of which are unique – along with a specialized library, linguistic data collection and analysis services and a linguistic geography computer laboratory.

The specialized and internationally networked research group who works at the institute conducts research primarily in the areas of dialectology, regional language research, phonetics, prosody, phonology, morphology and syntax and develops methods of linguistic data collection and analysis. These are also the thematic foci of the courses held by members of the institute.
