VPN on Windows

  • Note: MS Surface Tab Pro X users can alternatively use the version from the Windows App Store

    • Download & Installation

      1. Open https://vpn.uni-marburg.de. On the login page, select the appropriate user group, log in with your account username and password, and confirm the welcome message by clicking Continue.
      2. You will now be taken to the VPN start page. To install the program, click the Start AnyConnect link which appears.
      3. Click on Download for Windows
      4. Log out again by clicking Logout (top right).
      5. Run the downloaded installer and follow the instructions.
    • Establishing a VPN connection

      1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection.
      2. Start the "Cisco AnyConnect" program.
      3. In the connection dialog, select Connect to connect to the VPN. Make sure that the server "vpn.uni-marburg.de" has been specified.
      4. In the login dialog, select the appropriate user group and enter your account username and password. Then select Connect.
      5. Confirm the welcome dialog with Accept.
      6. After a few seconds, you should be connected to the VPN and able to access sources within the university network.
    • Troubleshooting

      Problems Possible causes and solutions
      Connection establishment in Windows 8.1 fails with the message "Failed to initialize connection subsystem". The cause of the problem is a Windows 8.1 security update. Microsoft has since released a new update that fixes the error. Please connect your computer to the Internet, select Start → Control Panel → Windows Update and install all available updates. After a Windows restart, your AnyConnect connection should work again. If you need troubleshooting assistance, please contact the IT-Servicedesk of the HRZ.
      The connection setup fails with the message "The VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot". Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is active. Anyconnect does not establish a VPN connection when this is enabled. In the properties of the network connection that connects to the Internet, turn off Internet Connection Sharing. Select Start → Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Center → Change Adapter Settings. Right-click the network connection in question (usually LAN connection or wireless network connection) to open a context menu; select its last item Properties. In the Sharing tab, you can disable Internet connection sharing.
      The connection setup fails with the message "AnyConnect was not able to establish a connection to the specified secure gateway. Please try connecting again".

      When using the Kaspersky AV firewall, Anyconnect must be added as an exception. However, it usually makes more sense to use the virus scanner provided free of charge by the HRZ.

      Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is active. Anyconnect does not establish a VPN connection if this is activated. In the properties of the network connection that connects to the Internet, turn off Internet Connection Sharing.       You have encountered a software error in AnyConnect. If there is a value like "@oem20.inf,%vpnva_Desc%;Cisco AnyConnect VPN Virtual Miniport Adapter for Windows x64" in the Windows registry database (regedit.exe) for the registry key "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vpnva\DispayName", all characters before the word "Cisco" should be removed in the given value. After that, exit the registry editor, restart AnyConnect and start the VPN connection again.

      The connection fails with the message "Connection attempt failed. Please try again". The wrong VPN gateway was set in AnyConnect. Enter the correct VPN gateway vpn.uni-marburg.de and restart the VPN connection.
      The connection setup fails with the message "Could not connect to server. Please verify Internet connectivity and server address". The computer does not have a working Internet connection. Make sure that your computer has a working Internet connection and restart the VPN connection.
      The installation fails with the error message: "Failed to install AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client with installer error: Incorrect function. A VPN connection cannot be established" Additional firewall, anti-virus, or Internet security software prevents AnyConnect from installing correctly. Temporarily disable the firewall or anti-virus functionality and start the installation of AnyConnect again. If this does not work, uninstall the corresponding software, restart Windows and try installing AnyConnect again. If you have uninstalled your existing anti-virus software, you should install a new anti-virus software as soon as possible, e.g. Anti-Virus-Software for students und staff of Philipps-Universität Marburg.
