Neuro- and Patholinguistics (Master of Arts)

Official titLE Neuro- und Patholinguistik
Degree Master of Arts (M.A.)
Program length 4 semesters / 2 years (120 ECTS points)
Start Wintersemester
Language of instruction German

The master’s program in “Neuro- and Patholinguistics” brings together the related linguistic disciplines of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and clinical linguistics/patholinguistics to conduct comprehensive, high-level research into the cognitive and neural processes underlying normal and impaired language processing, as well as typical and atypical language acquisition. Over the course of four semesters, the focus is on experimental and clinical methods as well as models of language processing in individuals with and without language disorders. You will acquire in-depth knowledge in the aforementioned disciplines of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and patholinguistics, as well as in related fields (e.g., neuroscience, cognitive science, and selected other disciplines of linguistics); you will be able to actively apply this knowledge and design and conduct your own studies.
The program comprises a foundational, intermediate, and advanced or specialized track, as well as an internship, and allows you to deepen your individual interests, for example through:
• Expanding your methodological knowledge (experimental techniques such as EEG, eye tracking, and functional magnetic resonance imaging, statistics)
• Deepening your understanding of clinical content in patholinguistic modules (e.g., diagnosis and therapy for acquired or developmental language disorders)
• Engaging with current research topics in additional linguistic modules (e.g., multilingualism or neurophonetics)

Objectives

As a graduate of the master’s program with a specialization in psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics, you will be qualified to conduct experimental research in the field of linguistic cognition. Due to the data-oriented focus, you also have the opportunity to pursue careers in the field of Digital Humanities and (depending on your programming skills) in research data management, and you will be able to conduct empirical work in non-academic contexts as well.

If you have previously completed an undergraduate degree in speech therapy (with health insurance accreditation), the Master’s in Neuro- and Patholinguistics opens up a wide range of career paths: in leadership roles at speech therapy institutions (e.g., clinics and therapy centers), in consulting, research, and practice at public agencies (e.g., counseling centers, ministries), in educational institutions, and at municipal or regional outpatient centers. Teaching positions in speech therapy training programs or degree programs, as well as an academic career, are also open to you.
