Career Paths in Literary Studies

Most linguistic cultures, but by no means all, have also produced literature. Literary studies take a close look at how language can become text and text can become literature. This does not have to be limited to painted, engraved, or written text; there is also oral literature. This allows us to focus on a specific period (epoch), language family, regional characteristic, or to devote ourselves to the literary process in general. How, where, when, and why does literature come into being? Can the literary process fail? Does the work actually think for itself? This special product- and production-oriented perspective gives those who specialize in literary studies their own unique entry point to the academic job market, which will be highlighted here. They are – “naturally” – the book specialists par excellence, so they will have the best opportunities wherever there is a connection to books, both in their printed and digital forms. Even during the bachelor’s, it may well be worthwhile to consider a suitable complementary education (a “self-made dual study program” as a bookseller, publishing clerk, bookbinder, etc.). In publishing, career entry with a master’s degree is usually organized through trainee programs. Doctoral graduates in literature have a significant freedom of movement on the international job market. There are no special training and continuing education programs that go beyond what all German studies graduates can acquire. The best continuing education that comes into play here is called diversification.

This results in the following eight career paths:

- Research
