The research-oriented, consecutive Islamwissenschaft / Islamic Studies master's program provides you with specialized knowledge of the normative religious source texts of Islam and their interpretations, the history of the Islamic religion, culture and ideas, from early Islam to the present, and the diverse manifestations and interpretative patterns of Islam in the Muslim communities and societies of today.

The expansion of active linguistic expertise in Arabic, as the most important source language of Islam, and the acquisition of linguistic skills in another Islamic language (Persian or Turkish) form the basis of scholarly work.

Major topics

In addition to deepening specialized knowledge of Islamic studies and practical linguistic skills, teaching focuses on methodological and particularly cultural, religious and social-scientific approaches to the research fields.

Objectives

As a result of specialized, practical linguistic and intercultural competencies acquired in the program, as well as the ability to meaningfully convey independently developed research results, successful graduates of the Islamwissenschaft / Islamic Studies master's program have access to a broad spectrum of possible professional fields.

These primarily include scholarly positions at universities and other research institutions. Other professional fields include adult education, international organizations and cultural institutions, cultural mediation, public relations, ministries and official offices, journalism and the library sector.

  • Admission requirements

    Required university degree

    Certification of completion of a degree from a specific bachelor's program in "Islamic studies" or certification of completion of a subject-relevant bachelor's program in the field of Asian, Islamic or Middle Eastern studies, or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university diploma.

    The examination board can make admission contingent on additional academic performances and/or examination performances of 12 CP maximum being produced. In this case, the program can be extended accordingly.

    Other language skills:
    Arabic or Turkish language skills of at least 30 credits or equivalent certifications are required.
    Admission Mode Direct admission is granted with complete fulfillment of the admission requirements.
