Orientation unit (additional events)

Dear Prospective and First-Semester Students,

Your studies are about to begin!

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this semester will also be a hybrid semester (a mix of face-to-face and online teaching). This will bring new opportunities as well as great challenges.

Together with the Autonomous Office for Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses, the student adviser in Department 01 Law and the student advisers in Department 04 Psychology, we will be offering additional services for students with disabilities and chronic or mental illnesses at the start of summer and winter semesters — in addition to the regular orientation session in the departments.

The additional events include in particular:

  • Individual guidance in your department
  • Introduction to the specific set-up in your department and drawing up an overview of your schedule (creating a course schedule)
  • Introduction to the general (digital) set-up at Philipps-Universität Marburg (presentation)
  • Visiting the canteen (German Mensa) in small groups with optional lunch
  • Guided tour of the central university library (with the option of earning a certificate of participation)
  • Accessible pub night

We will try to fit additional events into the week depending on how many people register. Of course, in case of schedule conflicts, we can also set up individual appointments in subsequent weeks.

You can find the applicable programming here immediately before the start of the semester, along with a chance to register.

For more information on individual events:

  • Individual tour in your department

Date, time, and place: You can set up the appointment with an individual contact person.

Shortly before the start of orientation week, you will be given the name of another student in your department as a contact. You can proactively get in touch with this person and arrange a one-on-one appointment.
At this event, you will be introduced to the department in terms of which offices, classrooms, labs and lecture halls are located where, and your contact will point out important locations where you can ask questions, get help, and meet people.
This event will not replace any training in orientation and mobility depending on your (dis)ability.

  • Introduction to the specific set-up in your department(s) / introductory overview of creating a course schedule

Date, time, and place: You can set up an appointment with an individual contact person in your department.

Depending on demand, this appointment may also include a small group of people.
Shortly before the start of orientation week, you will be given the name of another student in your department as a contact. You can then get in touch with this person and set up a one-on-one appointment.

At this appointment, you will be able to discuss in more detail support for specific research, how to use special online services, or how to access the libraries of the applicable departments.

The introductory overview to creating a course schedule will also be done specific to your department. Please make sure that you attend one of the dates offered by your student association or department(s).

  • Introduction to the general (digital) set-up at Philipps-Universität Marburg (presentation)

Date, time, and place: This event will be held on a set day and time.

At the event, an SBS student assistant from a higher semester will introduce you to the general (digital) set-up at Philipps-Universität Marburg from the perspective of a person pursing a degree with a disability.

Afterward, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and arrange further one-on-one appointments as needed.

  • Visiting the canteen (German Mensa) in small groups with optional lunch

Date, time, and place: This event will be offered multiple times in small groups.

Shortly before the start orientation week, an SBS study adviser will contact you to discuss the details with you.
You can get help during the study advisers’ guided tour in obtaining the U-Card and get information about how to use it. This event also covers the option of canteen food service for students, the Black Board (notice board), other counseling services from the Student Union (BaFöG financial aid, housing, social counseling, etc.).
You are of course welcome to participate without having food or beverages.
If you would like to purchase a U-Card, please bring your student ID, a €5 deposit, and sufficient funds to load it.
Note: You can also activate your U-Card as a library card later on. It is absolutely essential for copying and borrowing books!

  • Guided tour of the central university library (with the option of earning a certificate of participation)

Date, time, and place: This event will be offered multiple times in small groups.

Shortly before the start orientation week, an SBS study adviser will contact you to discuss the details of the tour. You will learn the fundamentals of using the library including loans/returns, study spaces, computer workstations, support service and food.

In addition, you have the option at this event to get help personalizing your U-Card as a library card.
Note: If you want to activate your U-Card as a library card, please bring your U-Card and your student ID.
You can get a certificate of participation upon request.

  • Accessible pub night

Date, time, and place: This event will be held on a set day and time.

This evening is all about an informal get-together where you can get to know your fellow students a bit better in private and talk about study expectations, inclusive sports, accessible pubs, etc. You’ll be joined on this evening by the Autonomous Office for Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses (ABR) as well as student counselors in different majors.

You’ll get your invitation to pub night with sufficient advance notice from Kai Kortus, who is the current head of the ABR. If you have any follow-up questions, contact the ABR.
