In 1529, two years after founding his university, Philipp the Magnanimous set up a scholarship foundation that still exists today. The ‘Philippinium College’ (housed in the annexes of the castle) is now a self-managed residence hall of the Philipps-Universität Marburg, which is financed through state, communal and church funds.

The preparatory college prepares foreign applicants for the school-leaving equivalency exam and German language proficiency test required for admission to the Universities of Marburg and Giessen as well as at the Giessen-Friedberg University of Applied Sciences. The preparatory college has offices in Marburg and Giessen.
