Description

The subject of "Philosophie / Philosophy" in the Teaching in Secondary Schools program is oriented based on the requirements of the practice of teaching Philosophy in secondary schools.

The program imparts the subject and teaching-related principles for exercising the teaching profession at secondary schools and collects initial experiences in practical teaching in schools, following academic instruction.

The university education provides future teachers with professional qualifications in order to analyze, plan, design and reflect educational processes in Philosophy teaching in schools.

Major topics

Students receive a systematic overview of all important disciplines and eras of Philosophy. The program focuses on theoretical and practical philosophy, logic and the history of philosophy.

In accordance with the research focus of the institute, the teaching places particular emphasis on the philosophy of the Enlightenment and on Kantian philosophy.
Furthermore, students have the option to specialize in a subject area. Here, students can participate in activities that provide them with insights into existing research projects and thereby introduce them to the current research discussion.

In addition to teaching philosophical content, the objective is to stimulate independent academic work and to familiarize students with humanistic methods.

Another important area of specialization of the teacher training program in Philosophy is in the field of teaching methodology, which is performed at Marburg in the context of the specified research focus. Teaching methodological training directly benefits from this. It is intended to prepare students for their later professional lives and therefore takes place in close cooperation with schools.

Objectives

The program qualifies students for academic work and for the socially responsible execution of the teaching profession based on the acquired expertise; that is, through knowledge, qualifications and perspectives.

If you should decide not to become a teacher, however, there are alternatives. While no "professional field" as a whole can be cited for philosophers, there are areas in which you will compete with other humanities scholars and for which you will be comprehensively equipped.

Philosophers are often found in the following fields outside of the school:

• Universities
• Adult education
• Publishing – including textbook publishers, of course
• Journalism
• Philosophical consulting
• Libraries and public administration (higher civil service)

Organization, consulting and management work in governmental administrative, cultural and business areas

  Education certificates	General higher education entrance qualification or subject-related higher education entrance qualification or master’s certificate and comparable certificates from advanced professional training or professional qualifications
  Certifications of program-specific knowledge and skills to be submitted prior to admission	German Skills: DSH 2 Other foreign language skills: NOTE: before the interim examination (end of 4th semester), skills in a foreign language must be certified: either English skills at Level B2 or Latin skills within the scope of the Latinum or Ancient Greek, within the scope of the Graecum.   It is recommended to be able to verify these skills at the start of the program.
