Philosophie / Philosophy (Bachelor of Arts)
Program: Philosophie / Philosophy
Degree: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
Program length: 6 semesters / 3 years (180 ECTS points)
The Philosophie / Philosophy bachelor's program at the Philipps University of Marburg qualifies you to critically approach scholarly and societal problems and to be able to perform analytical-argumentative analyses, both in the university setting and in professional practice outside the university, based on a broad range of content and methodological knowledge in the subject. The emphasis of instruction lies in historical enlightenment and systematic enlightenment, according to the research profile of the Institute for Philosophy. You will be enabled to independently diagnose fundamental problems both within and outside of the discipline and to demonstrate methodological-argumentatively supported routes to possible solutions. The bachelor's program, which is geared toward introduction and overview and represents an entry-level qualifying degree, also serves as the foundation for a subsequent master's program.
Major topics
The content of the program is divided into the areas of theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy and history of philosophy, with special emphasis on Kant research and the philosophy of the Enlightenment.
In addition to studies in the discipline, the Philosophie / Philosophy bachelor's program also comprises supplementary modules from other sciences (e.g. historical science, political science and sociology, information technology and mathematics) and interdisciplinary modules in which cross-disciplinary, profession-oriented key qualifications are imparted.
Objectives
There remains a marked discrepancy between the study and profession of philosophy. The profession of philosopher, as a university instructor, is open to only a few. In addition to this outlook of graduates on a career path as university professor, however, a number of professional fields have developed whose profile of requirements match the expertise profile of the “Philosophie / Philosophy” bachelor's program.
Specifically, these include:
Adult education, specialist publishing, newspapers, magazines, radio and television, philosophical consulting, librarians, administrative specialists in higher civil service, organizational, consulting and management jobs in governmental administrative, cultural and business management departments.
