  • 2019: Elyze Zomer: Middle Babylonian Literary Texts from the Frau Professor Hilprecht Collection, Jena.

This volume contains editions of literary fragments from the Middle Babylonian period (ca. 1500–1000 BCE) kept in the Hilprecht-Collection in Jena. Presented in full are The Epic of Gulkišar (HS 1885+), a Mythological Narrative on Pa(p)nigara (HS 1886), a Ceremony in the Ekur (HS 1902), and the Games Text (HS 1893), with introductions, transliterations, translations, philological commentaries, hand copies and photographs.
All texts are of special interest; The Epic of Gulkišar is a Middle Babylonian copy narrating the heroic deeds of its eponymous Sealand I king against Samsuditana, the last king of the First Dynasty of Babylon, the Mythological Narrative on Pa(p)nigara portrays the otherwise poorly known deity Pa(p)nigara, the Ceremony in the Ekur tells us of an hitherto unknown ceremony carried out at the Ekur temple in Nippur, and the Games Text is unique in the fact that it enumerates a great variety of children’s games set in daily life Babylon.

  • 2019: Alena Strohmaier: Medienraum Diaspora.

  • 2018: Andrea Fischer-Tahir / Steffen Wippel (eds.): Jenseits etablierter Meta-Geographien. Der Nahe Osten und Nordafrika in transregionaler Perspektive.

Like other world regions, the ‘Middle East and North Africa’ is often regarded as a well-defined, closed and largely homogeneous area. However, it is actually a region that is subject to continuous reconfigurations and for which numerous denotations exist. At the same time, economic, cultural, social and political interrelationships and processes of exchange unfold in totally different regional contexts, which intersect with established spatial ideas, e.g. across the Indian Ocean, the Sahara and the Caucasus. Therefore, this volume promotes a transregional perspective on the circulation of goods, ideas and people, without being limited by fixed meta-geographies. In doing so, it makes its position clear in critical debates on space production and area studies and brings together research that academic knowledge production has customarily separated according to regions and disciplines.

  • 2018: Elyze Zomer: Corpus of Middle Babylonian and Middle Assyrian Incantations.

The present volume is the first systematic treatment of the Corpus of Middle Babylonian and Middle Assyrian Incantations. It comprises an exhaustive and detailed catalogue of all magical material in cuneiform texts in Sumerian and Akkadian from the Middle Babylonian and Middle Assyrian periods (ca. 1500–1000 BCE). The work begins with a typology of the different sub-groups of incantations, the physical properties of the tablets, an innovative survey of the text formats, a discussion of drawings on magical texts and a critical discussion of the different paratextual comments, followed by an overview of the geographical and archival setting and an examination on the social context of the corpus. The circulation of magical texts during the Late Bronze Age is investigated by outlining the corpus itself: its thematic grouping of incantations, division of unilingual and bilingual texts, local scribal traditions and their influences. With respect to the question of whether the standardization of incantations took place in Mesopotamia during the Second Millennium, an extensive chapter provides a comparative analysis of the incantation corpora of the Third and Second Millennium against the standardized ritual series of the First Millennium. Fifty cuneiform texts have been edited and translated, accompanied by a thorough philological commentary.

  • 2017: Goulia Ghardashkhani (ed.): Another Place: Identity, Space, and Transcultural Signification in Goli Taraqqi's Fiction.

In Another Place: Identity, Space, and Transcultural Signification in Goli Taraqqi's Fiction, Goulia Ghardashkhani examines the narrative process of the struggle for identification in the short stories of one of the well-established figures of Iranian contemporary prose literature. Goli Taraqqi's narratives of displacement and emigration are approached through a theoretical lens that foregrounds the significance of space and the role of retrospective self-narration in acts of cultural representation. Ghardashkhani studies Taraqqi's autobiographical narratives with an emphasis on the unstable meanings of homeland and Farang (a culturally constructed term signifying the West) and, thereby, accounts for Taraqqi's ironical style of narration in her memories of homeland recollected in exile.

  • 2017: Albrecht Fuess, Stefan Weninger (eds.): A life with the Prophet? Examining Hadith, Sira and Qur'an. In Honor of Wim Raven.

The present study presents a comprehensive insight into actual trends in academia in Arabic literature and Islamic studies. In this respect, the contributions pay tribute to Wim Raven, an outstanding scholar of early Arabic literature and the formative period of Islam and someone who always had new and surprising twists and turns in his research and scholarly productions. The same holds true with the papers presented here. Robert Hoyland presents us with his reasoning about the origin of the term “aʿjamī language” in the Qur’an. Was this really a “non-Arab” tongue as later tradition would have it, or would it be better to classify it as a “North-Arabian” dialect? Anna Akasoy deals with “chick lit” in the Hijaz and the modern image of Aisha as Muslim role Model. Remke Kruk looks at famous warrior women in pre-Islamic literature and their relation to the forthcoming Prophet Mohammed. Jan Just Witkam provides us with the story (Arabic edition and English translation) of a young man setting out from Damascus, travelling further north looking for adventures, fighting monsters, losing his wife, marrying a second one, then a third one, only to find out that she can transform into a gazelle: Indeed, this story has it all! And it provides a good insight in Early Islamic Story telling. Finally, Hans Daiber explains how the thinking of Aristotel’s Organon became included and modified in Ibn al-Muqaffaʿs (d. 140/757) Kitāb al-Adab al-kabīr (Great Book of the Rules of Conduct). Central themes of his contributions are the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, virtue and friendship as motors for human behavior.

  • 2017: Andrea Fischer-Tahir, Sophie Wagenhofer (eds.): Disciplinary Spaces. Spatial Control, Forced Assimilation and Narratives of Progress since the 19th Century.

This volume looks at territories such as reservations, model villages and collective towns as the spatial materialization of forced assimilation and "progress". These disciplinary spaces were created in order to disempower and alter radically the behavior of people who were perceived as ill-suited "to fit" into hegemonic imaginations of "the nation" since the 19th century.
Comparing examples from the Americas, Australia, North and East Africa, Central Europe as well as West and Central Asia, the book not only considers the acts and legitimizing narrations of ruling actors, but highlights the agency of the subaltern who are often misrepresented as passive victims of violent assimilation strategies.

  • 2016: Malte Hagener, Vinzenz Hediger and Alena Strohmaier (eds): The State of Post-Cinema: Tracing the Moving Image in the Age of Digital Dissemination.

This book approaches the topic of the state of post-cinema from a new direction. The authors explore how film has left the cinema as a fixed site and institution and now appears ubiquitous - in the museum and on the street, on planes and cars and new digital communication platforms of various kinds. The authors investigate how film has become more than cinema, no longer a medium that is based on the photochemical recording and replay of movement. Most often, the state of post-cinema is conceptualized from the "high end" of the most advanced technology; discussions focus on performance capture and digital 3-D, 4-K projection and industrial light & magic. Here, the authors' approach is focused on the "low-end" circulation of filmic images. This includes informal networks of exchange and transaction, such as p2p-networks, video platforms and so called “piracy” with a special focus on the Middle East and North Africa, where political and social transformations make new forms of circulation and presentation particularly visible.

  • 2016: Mohammad Reza Farzanegan, Pooya Alaedini (eds.): Economic Welfare and Inequality in Iran: Developments since the Revolution.

This book examines economic inequality and social disparity in Iran, together with their drivers, over the past four decades. During this period, income distribution and economic welfare were affected by the 1979 Revolution, the eight-year war with Iraq, post-war privatization and economic liberalization initiatives carried out under the Rafsanjani and Khatami administrations, the ascendance of a populist economic platform under the Ahmadinejad administration, and the lifting of energy and financial sanctions under the Rouhani administration. Featuring a mix of scholars, including Iranian academics who experienced these changes and are publishing in English for the first time, this collection offers quantitative and descriptive studies of the country's post-revolutionary economic development and disparities. In most chapters, a hypothesis is developed from existing theories or observations, which is then tested using available data. This unique combination of new voices, academic as well as personal experiences, and scientific methods will be a valuable addition to the library of the scholars of modern Iran’s economy and society.

  • 2016: Rainer Kessler, Walter Sommerfeld, Leslie Tramontini (eds.): State Formation and State Decline in the Near and Middle East.

At present, many Middle Eastern states experience turmoil, uprisings and crises. Chaos, civil war and vain negotiations seem to indicate the beginning of massive state decline and the end of the Middle East as we have known it. Discussing state formation and state decline in a historical perspective renders important insights into the region’s inner mechanisms: The Near and Middle East is one of the regions in which the earliest state formations of humanity took place; its 5000 years of history provide many examples of the formation, the continuity, and the decline of states. History carries its consequences into the present, and current zones of conflict cannot be understood without an in depth understanding of its historical roots.

The present volume State Formation and State Decline in the Near and Middle East, Rainer Kessler, Walter Sommerfeld, Leslie Tramontini (eds.), 200 pp., provides a broad overview of the Middle East’s diverse history and development. While not aiming at explaining the manifold reasons of the region’s current fragility, its contributions focus on the material prerequisites, the social, political and cultural factors that influence the formation, consolidation or decline of states.

  • 2015: Friederike Pannewick, Georges Khalil (eds.): Commitment and Beyond. Reflections on/of the Political since the 1940s.

This book is about relations between literature, society and politics in the Arab world. It is an attempt to come to terms with the changing conceptualizations of the political in Arabic literature in recent modern history. It examines historical and contemporary conceptions of literary commitment (iltizām) and how notions of ‘writing with a cause’ have been shaped, contested, and re-actualized since the 1940s until today. Against the backdrop of the current social and political transformations in the Arab world, questions on the role of the arts, specifically literature and its politics, arise with immediacy and require profound reflection and analysis.

The chapters reexamine critically both current and historical notions of the political in modern Arabic literature as well as the legacy of iltizām as a term and an agenda. Literary commitment is understood here not just solely as a (completed) period in Arabic literary history but also as a vivid, changing and continuing idea that questions the role of literature and the author in and for a society.

  • 2015: Oliver Kahl: The Sanskrit, Syriac and Persian Sources in the Comprehensive Book of Rhazes.

The Secretariat of the 24th World Award for Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran recently announced that Oliver Kahls Book "The Sanskrit, Syriac and Persian Sources in the Comprehensive Book of Rhazes" has been selected as one of the best new works in the field of Islamic/Iranian Studies.

This work offers a critical analysis of the Sanskrit, Syriac and Persian sources in Rhazes’ (d. 925 CE) Comprehensive Book (or al-Kitāb al-Ḥāwī), a hugely famous and highly unusual medico-pharmaceutical encyclopedia originally written in Arabic. All text material appears in full Arabic with English translations throughout, whilst the traceable Indian fragments are represented here, for the first time, in both the original Sanskrit and corresponding English translations. The philological core of the book is framed by a detailed introductory study on the transmission of Indian, Syrian and Iranian medicine and pharmacy to the Arabs, and by extensive bilingual glossaries of relevant Arabic and Sanskrit terms as well as Latin botanical identifications.

  • 2015: Hartmut Elsenhans, Rachid Ouaissa, Sebastian Schwecke, Mary Ann Tétreault (eds.): The Transformation of Politicised Religion. From Zealots into Leaders.

Including the contributions of leading scholars from Algeria, France, Germany, India and the United States, this book traces the rise and turn to moderation of the New Cultural Identitarian Political Movements, often labelled in the West as fundamentalists. The Transformation of Politicised Religion traces the rise of these movements to the changes in their respective countries’ political economy and class structures, explaining why, as a result of an ongoing contestation and recreation of bourgeois values, the more powerful of these movements tend towards moderation.

  • 2013: Leslie Tramontini, John Donohue sj (eds.), in collaboration with Ines Weinrich and Nara Kanj: Contemporary Arab Writers - Biographies and Autobiographies.

Academic reference works for modern Arab literature are rare, – a fact that drove the Beirut research institutes Centre d’études pour le monde arabe moderne, Université St. Joseph, and the Orient-Institut Beirut (Max Weber Stiftung) some 15 years ago to publish a dictionary of modern Arab writers. This first edition of a’lam al-adab al-arabi al-mu’asir (1996) contained the mainstream of Arabic literature post World War II up to the year 1975, listing 380 authors with biographical background information and bibliographical material. It is unique in its genre, – no other reference work on modern Arab literature embraces such a detailed scientific approach including such a large number of Arab authors and information on their lives and their literary production.

The present, second Arabic edition follows mainly the enlarged English version of 2004, with updated bibliographies and extensive information on the authors who provided autobiographies or short texts on how they came to write. Included are the main authors writing in Arabic who shaped the modern literature of the Arab world in the second half of the 20th century. The entries consist of a short biographical note, a complete bibliography of their works and an extensive bibliography on works written about them. Mirroring the modern Arab literary scene in all its liveliness, diversity and richness in a way which is in itself literary, the autobiographies render this book unique and different from traditional compilations of dry data and facts and usual encyclopedias.

  • 2013: Bianca Devos, Christoph Werner (eds.): Culture and Cultural Politics Under Reza Shah. The Pahlavi State, New Bourgeoisie and the Creation of a Modern Society in Iran.

Culture and Cultural Politics Under Reza Shah presents a collection of innovative research on the interaction of culture and politics accompanying the vigorous modernization programme of the first Pahlavi ruler. Examining a broad spectrum of this multifaceted interaction it makes an important contribution to the cultural history of the 1920s and 1930s in Iran, when, under the rule of Reza Shah Pahlavi, dramatic changes took place inside Iranian society. With special reference to the practical implementation of specific reform endeavours, the various contributions critically analyze different facets of the relationship between cultural politics, individual reformers and the everyday life of modernist Iranians. Interpreting culture in its broadest sense, this book brings together contributions from different disciplines such as literary history, social history, ethnomusicology, art history, and Middle Eastern politics. In this way, it combines for the first time the cultural history of Iran's modernity with the politics of the Reza Shah period. Challenging a limited understanding of authoritarian rule under Reza Shah, this book is a useful contribution to existing literature for students and scholars of Middle Eastern History, Iranian History and Iranian Culture.

  • 2013: Christoph Werner, Daniel Zakrzewski, Hans-Thomas Tillschneider: Die Kujuji-Stiftungen in Tabriz.

  • 2012: Pierre Hecker: Turkish Metal. Music, Meaning, and Morality in a Muslim Society.

Turkish Metal journeys deep into the heart of the Turkish heavy metal scene, uncovering the emergence, evolution, and especially the social implications of this controversial musical genre in a Muslim society. The book applies an ethnographic approach in order to study social and cultural change in a Muslim society that is stricken with conflict over the, by turns, religious or secular nature of the state. Turkish Metal explores how Turkish metalheads, against all odds, manage to successfully claim public spaces of their own, thereby transforming the public face of the city. The book raises the question of how and why the young dare to rebel against the prevalent social and moral restrictions in Turkish society; and it examines whether they succeed in asserting their individual freedom in a society that is still well-known for sanctioning any kind of behaviour deviating from the norm. Above all, the book investigates the Turkish metal scene's potential for contesting Islamic concepts of morality, its relevance within the field of female emancipation, and its capacity to foster social relations that cut across national, religious and ethnic boundaries.

  • 2012: Stephan Milich, Friederike Pannewick, Leslie Tramontini (eds.): Conflicting Narratives. War, Trauma and Memory in Iraqi Culture.

This volume deals with the Iraqi cultural production under and after Baathist rule, a research field which, in comparison to Iraqi history and politics, has attracted relatively scant scholarly attention.

The contributors depict the impact of dictatorship, sanctions, and successive wars on Iraqi culture, analyze the predominant narratives and counter-narratives in Iraqi culture, as well as considering the effect of the demographic shift to exile and diaspora.

Further contributions deal with the fragmentation of Iraq’s political culture and artistic representations of diverse identities and historical memories.

And last but by no means least, the volume asks how the strategies of those intellectuals who supported and legitimized official politics during the Baathist rule can be approached and studied critically with a view to gaining a better understanding of how official culture functioned.

  • 2011: Stefan Weninger (ed.): The Semitic Languages. An International Handbook.

  • 2010: Albrecht Fuess, Jan-Peter Hartung (eds.): Court Cultures in the Muslim World. Seventh to Nineteenth Centuries.

Courts and the complex phenomenon of the courtly society have received intensified interest in academic research over recent decades, however, the field of Islamic court culture has so far been overlooked. This book provides a comparative perspective on the history of courtly culture in Muslim societies from the earliest times to the nineteenth century, and presents an extensive collection of images of courtly life and architecture within the Muslim realm.

The thematic methodology employed by the contributors underlines their interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to issues of politics and patronage from across the Islamic world stretching from Cordoba to India. Themes range from the religious legitimacy of Muslim rulers, terminologies for court culture in Oriental languages, Muslim concepts of space for royal representation, accessibility of rulers, the role of royal patronage for Muslim scholars and artists to the growing influence of European courts as role models from the eighteenth century onwards. Discussing specific terminologies for courts in Oriental languages and explaining them to the non specialist, chapters describe the specific features of Muslim courts and point towards future research areas. As such, it fills this important gap in the existing literature in the areas of Islamic history, religion, and Islam in particular.
