Placement Procedure

Who must take a placement test?

  • If you have never learned any Italian, you clearly do not have to take a placement test. Your only booking option then is an A1 course.
  • If you have learned some Italian in the past, a placement test is mandatory. The result will indicate at which level you can continue at the Language Center.
  • Exception: Students who have successfully completed an Italian course at the Language Center in the previous semester and have gained a grade of 8 or higher can book a class on the next level without an additional test (follow-up registration). However, this is limited to a certain period of time, as specified in the email notifications sent out to those eligible for follow-up registration.

What does the placement test for Italian look like?

The placement test for Italian consists of an online test and an oral test taken at the Language Center.

1. Online C-test (cloze test)

A C-test consists of a set of multiple cloze texts in which the second half of every other word is missing starting from the second sentence. You will try to complete the gaps so that the text makes sense. This can be done by combining your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar as well as by “intelligent guessing”. If you are interested in the design of the test, you can take 5-minute trial test anonymously.

Summer semester 2024

Online from Monday 4 March 2024.

ATTENTION: Please use only letters of the German alphabet for entering your personal data. Don’t use Umlauts ('Ä/ä', 'Ü/ü', 'Ö/ö') and special letters such as 'ß' and foreign language letters and accents.

Please note: The result of the online C-Tests will be displayed to you directly after this test but it is only a partial result, not the final placement result!

2. Oral test

The oral test takes the form of an oral interview in Italian with the Italian coordinator, Dr. Paola Pacchioni-Becker or a teacher, for instance about everyday subjects. You may also be asked to describe a photo or speak about an article. The conversation lasts for about 5-10 minutes.

Dates: Wednesday, 17 April 2024, 2:00-4:00 p.m. and Thursday, 18 April 2024, 10:00-11:00 a.m. in room 00/029, Biegenstraße 12.
