Would you like to explore photography not only as an art form, but also as a medium of communication and documentation? Then the interdisciplinary Master’s programme “Photography – Medium and Archive” is just right for you. In cooperation with the German Documentation Centre for Art History (DDK) and the “Bildarchiv Foto Marburg”, we offer you a unique combination of art history, media studies and archival research.

During your studies, you will delve deeply into the theory and practice of photography and learn how to apply scientific methods to photography as a medium of art, communication and memory. You will gain in-depth insights into current areas of research and be able to apply this knowledge in practice in a targeted manner.

Objectives

After graduating, you will be ideally qualified for management positions in institutions that work with photography and image archives, whether in (art) museums, libraries, monument preservation offices or private collections. You will also be able to work in various media areas and public relations. If you wish to pursue an academic career, this programme also provides the perfect foundation for a PhD.

  • Admission requirements

    Required university degreeWe require proof of completion of a relevant Bachelor’s degree in art history, media studies, visual studies, cultural studies or proof of a comparable professional qualification from a domestic or foreign university.

    Graduates of a Bachelor’s degree programme in Art, Design, Social Sciences or History must provide evidence of image media-related modules or courses worth at least 24 credits.

    The examination board may grant admission on condition that additional modules worth a maximum of 12 credits are completed. In such cases, the degree programme may be prolonged accordingly.
    Certifications of program-specific knowledge and skills to be submitted prior to admissionWe require proof that you have attended a mandatory academic advising session, during which you provided information about your expectations and, based on this, received advice and an assessment regarding your choice of degree programme.

    Alternatively, the personal consultation can be replaced by a letter outlining your expectations, which will be used as a basis for assessing your choice of degree programme. Please contact the academic advisory service before submitting your application to find out whether such a letter is sufficient.

    Proof of personal academic counselling or, alternatively, a letter outlining your expectations must be submitted as part of your application documents.
