Invitation

The Department of Iranian Studies cordially invites all interested parties to "An Introduction to Iranian Music", an interdisciplinary workshop led by Elshan Ghasimi, master of Persian classical music.

As one of the most important pillars of Iranian culture, Persian classical music is inseperately linked to Iran’s literature and philosophy. Music’s formative role in art and society is reflected in literature, especially classical poetry, calligraphy, art of miniature painting and murals, as well as architecture. Therefore, a musical-artistic perspective is central to a comprehensive understanding of Iranian culture. The social role of music is no longer limited to Iran, as it is a transnational, unifying aspect of Iran's cultural heritage.

The "heart of Iranian music”, the tonal repertoire called “radīf”, is inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As such, the radīf is recognized as a rich cultural treasure and is said to reflect "the cultural and national identity of the Iranian people". As a professional musician, the instructor and initiator of our workshop, Elshan Ghasimi, has spent her entire life learning, researching and developing the musical tradition of Iran. She considers it one of her most important tasks to preserve and expand this musical treasure by building cultural bridges between Iranian and German intellectuals and artists or, as here in the academic field, by offering impulses to open up new interdisciplinary topics.
