In 1924, the singer Qamar-ol-Moluk Vaziri (1905-1959) was the first Muslim woman to perform without hijab on a public stage in front of a mixed audience.

In her project, Elshan Ghasimi examines Qamar's life and work in the historical context of her pioneering role, which also extended to many other areas of socio-cultural life in Iran.

With examples from musicological practice, this lecture highlights Qamar's formative influence on the situation of female musicians in Iran during the last century up to the present day.

The presentation will be held in English.

“Elshan Ghasimi is a master of the tar, a long-necked Iranian lute instrument, and of Persian classical art music, as well as a composer, performance artist and educator. She works in meeting spaces of tradition and modernity, West and East, music and other art forms.” For more information visit her web-site.
