PhD Colloquium in Islamic Studies at CNMS
On Friday, July 11, 2025, the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) at Philipps-University Marburg will host its annual PhD Colloquium in Islamic Studies. This event provides a platform for doctoral candidates to present their research and engage in constructive discussions with peers and faculty members.

The Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) at Philipps-University Marburg is pleased to announce the upcoming PhD Colloquium in Islamic Studies, scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, starting at 9:30 AM. This event serves as a platform for doctoral candidates to present their research findings and engage in constructive discussions with fellow researchers and faculty members. We warmly invite all interested individuals to attend and participate in the discussions.
Event Schedule:
9:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Introduction and Presentations by Ibrahim Shaheen and Rana Aly
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Joint Lunch and Break
2:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Presentations by Katja Symank and Derya Buğur, followed by an Outlook and Updates from Islamic Studies
Katja Symank: Belief After the Reign of Terror: Transformation of Religious Attitudes in Iraq Due to the Islamic State
Mehmood Ali Khan: The Politics of Cinema in Iran and Pakistan Post-Islamisation
Ibrahim Mohammad Ahmad Shaheen: Challenges and Strategies in Translating German Family Law into Arabic: A Translation Studies Intercultural Analysis
Rana Aly: Islamic NGOs Under Different Authoritarian Contexts in Egypt.
Saadat Ahmed: Islamic Welfare and Pastoral Care for Muslim Youth in Germany: An Analysis of Existing Concepts and Guidelines for Needs-Based Action
Derya Buğur: Voting Behaviour of Turkish-Origin Voters in Germany
Each presentation is allocated one hour, consisting of a 30-minute talk followed by a 30-minute discussion. While the primary focus is on the doctoral candidates' work, MA students in Islamic Studies are also invited to attend and participate in the discussions.
We look forward to a day of insightful presentations and engaging discussions.
