Germanic Tone Accents. Proceedings of the First International Workshop on Franconian Tone Accents, Leiden, 13-14 June 2003.

von Michiel de Vaan (Hg.)

The Franconian dialects of the area Düsseldorf-Koblenz-Trier-Maastricht are characterized by the presence of tone accents: different intonation patterns on otherwise homonymous words. In this respect, these dialects can be compared with Norwegian and Swedish, which also have tone accents. In 2003, Leiden University hosted the first international conference which addressed the phonetic description, the phonological interpretation, and the historical explanation of Franconian tone accents. Since the Scandinavian tone accents have already been investigated much more deeply, they were frequently used as benchmarks.
This supplement to the Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und Linguistik contains ten of the papers presents in Leiden. The wide array of themes makes this volume an excellent introduction into the scientific discussion on the Franconian tone accents.
