Waldemar Zacharasiewicz was Full Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Vienna from 1974 to 2010 after research at Graz, Birmingham, and Oxford, GB. From 1998 to February 2014 he was also Director of the Canadian Studies Center of the U of Vienna. He has been a Visiting Professor or Visiting Fellow at many North American and European universities and is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and of Academia Europaea, and a Foreign Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

He has received research awards from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Humanities Research Center in Austin, the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), and several Canadian Studies organizations. In 2018 he was awarded the title of "Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa" of the Eötvös Loránd University. His main areas of research are the transatlantic cultural exchange, travel literature and imagology, immigration and ethnic voices in North America, the literature and culture of the American South, the literature and culture of (Anglophone) Canada.
