22.05.2025 Open Lecture "Legacies of Liberation: Revisiting Peace Studies in Contentious Times"

In a context of ongoing wars and heightened social tensions the field of peace and conflict studies, which has long sought to explain the dynamics of war and efforts at peace, offers a range of perspectives. Some of these emanate from the Global South and speak to experiences of conflict and international politics there. The recurring nature of armed conflicts and the contested world order, in which an arms race is presented as an inevitable reply to international disputes, invites revisiting contours of the field and enquiring about approaches that counter the normalisation of armed conflicts. The talk draws on a selection of these steeped in the tradition of liberation and informed by social movements, which sustain peace endeavours as a perennial topic.
