The course provides a practical introduction to writing scientific publications. The general structure of scientific publications is explained, and a template for writing first drafts is provided. Participants will be asked to bring one to three publications from their own field of research that are similar to their own planned publication. These ‚model papers‘ will be scanned for key phrases and elements that can then be used as a starting point for writing new texts. A week before the course starts, participants will be asked to think about the possible ‚take-home messages‘ of their planned articles and to compile figures and tables summarizing their current results (or outlining what these results should look like). Then, starting by organizing the results and by formulating the key message and a first tentative title and abstract, the main parts of all elements of the manuscript will be written. Participants will also be asked to review each other‘s texts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You are able to extract key phrases and texts from ‚model papers‘ (discussion).
  • You have a clear understanding of how to write papers, and you will have produced the most important elements of a first draft (practical training).
  • You know principles for planning, analyzing, and writing scientific papers (handouts).
  • You will develop a personal writing schedule (discussion, feedback).
