Writing a scientific text is often a major challenge and hurdle for many young researchers. A lack of structure, complicated language, poor figures, and imprecise reasoning often make the message conveyed by the text difficult to read and understand. However, especially in a scientific context, contents must be conveyed precisely and clearly.
Scientific writing can be learned. With some tools for structuring a text, with a set of adequate wording and formulations, and by building a stringent chain of reasoning, it becomes possible to communicate even complicated facts and complex data in a comprehensible way. And it is even possible to turn your scientific results into interesting and exciting stories!
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn the basics of academic writing and structure your writing process. By using your own work in progress, you will actively engage in applying learned techniques to your own texts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You will have an overview of the characteristics of different types of academic texts (trainer input).
  • You will understand academic writing as a process and how to structure this process (trainer input).
  • You will have a clear grasp of why scientific writing is important for you and what your intrinsic and extrinsic motivations are (individual and group exercises).
  • You will know how to decide on a topic to write about and how to structure your argumentation and text accordingly (trainer input, group exercises).
  • You will be familiar with the stylistic elements of scientific texts, e.g., paragraphing, improvement of flow, and logic of argumentation (trainer input, individual and group exercises).
