Online

Biases are misconceptions and incomplete perceptions about certain groups of people or individuals that we form and learn throughout our lives. Everyone, no matter their age, social class, gender, or education, consciously or unconsciously holds beliefs that filter and categorize the vast amount of information that we are exposed to every moment.
We automatically use mental shortcuts to complete missing information about others. Within the university context, unconscious bias can influence our decision-making in a variety of ways, for instance, concerning selection procedures, performance evaluation, or personnel development.

Intended Learning Outcomes

After attending the workshop, you will be able to

  • perceive, identify, and question a number of biases (theoretical input on biases, work in groups on specific biases, self-reflection units),
  • evaluate different options for how to act when being confronted with your own or other people’s biases towards you (work in groups and discussion), and
  • integrate recommendations into your daily work (handout, case work in groups).

Interest in the topic; an open mindset to reflect on and question your own biases.

To participate in the online course, you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome or Firefox) as well as a headset (or speakers and a microphone), possibly a webcam, and a stable Internet connection.
