  • Center for Strategy and Scenario Planning

How will my sector be looking in 5 or 10 years? What kind of products will be purchased in the future? How will national economies in Asia with its growing middle classes develop in the comming years? Those questions are really hard to answer in todays complex and volatile world. Traditional strategic frameworks such as Porter's Five Forces and Ansoff's Product Matrix fail to deliver convincing answers. Experiences from the last crisis have shown that major attention has to be paid to non-lineary developments and that one has to be prepared for several different future scenarios.

This is where Scenario Planning comes into play. The delevopment and description of various future visions enables the possibility to reach a new level in strategy planning and management. Different firms have succesfully implemented strategy and scenario planning in their management. Shell was able to foresee the oil crisis in the 70's, Volkswagen mastered financial consequences and market distortions during times of hyperinflation in Brasil and Argentina in the 90's and IBM used scenarios to develop sustainable sector strategies.

The "Center for Strategy and Scenario Planning" ranks among one of the leading Centers in the field of Scenario-Management. A common initiative of the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and Roland Berger Stragey Consultants tries to exploit the whole potential of scenario planning for the practice. Thus, we constantly refine employed techniques and stimulate public debates about these methods.
