Questions about internships, leave of absence, illness and cases of hardship
Internship
You will find internship regulations applicable to you for the Degree Program and Examination Regulations (GER) in paragraph 11 and in the appendix Internship Regulations.
We have also provided you with information on internships on our internship-overview page (GER).
When and how is a formal leave of absence possible/useful?
I have fallen ill and therefore cannot take part in the examination (e.g., I cannot take the written examination or submit the term paper on time). What should I do?
If it is a regular module examination or compulsory coursework: Please send a medical certificate to the examiner confirming your inability to work before the examination date. Please provide the relevant examination number (GER) in ALL correspondence relating to examinations (including when submitting a doctor’s certificate) so that we can identify which examination it is.
Please note: If you withdraw from the first examination attempt with a certificate, the attempt will be credited to you (note in MARVIN: AT = certificate), so there is no failed attempt. You can then register for the retake date before the deadline (GER).
If it is the examination in the final module: If you fall ill after admission and before the submission deadline, you can submit an informal application (by post, original document signed by you) to the Examination Committee explaining why you need an extension of the submission deadline.
Enclose a certificate of inability to work/doctor’s certificate as proof [address: Philipps-Universität Marburg, Prüfungsbüro/Prüfungsausschuss FB03 or (for MA IDS: Prüfungsbüro/Prüfungsausschuss IDS), z.Hd. Mr. Trofimov (for MA) or Ms. Daum (for BA), Ketzerbach 63, Raum +2/0060, 35037 Marburg].
In this case, an extension is possible for up to 28 days (including weekends). If the illness persists beyond these 28 days, an official medical certificate (amtsärztliches Attest) is required to obtain a further extension.
How can I apply for disability or hardship accommodations? What is a case of hardship?
Accommodations can be applied for at Servicestelle für behinderte Studierende (SBS) (GER) in the following cases: raising children, caring for relatives and disability. An extension may be granted for written examination papers upon presentation of appropriate proof to the Examination Office.
We have provided an overview of what is considered a case of hardship (GER) (PDF).
For example, those affected by the war in Ukraine can currently—regardless of their nationality—withdraw from registered examinations or apply for an extension without losing the right to take the retake examination in the same semester. To do so, you must submit an informal and justified hardship application to the Chair of the Examination Committee (to be submitted to the Examinations Office, contact person in the Examinations Office is Anne-Mareike Weber).
