Are coursework achievements graded?
Coursework (SL) is generally ungraded. A formal distinction must be made between coursework and compulsory coursework.
Like examinations, compulsory coursework must be registered by students in a timely manner and recorded by you in the examination system as “passed/failed”.
Students should submit the sample cover sheet (docx) to you when submitting/completing the compulsory coursework and for examinations so that all the data required for recording is available.
All other coursework is not recorded in the examination system and only documented by you for your records. Students do not receive formal proof that they have completed this coursework.
Compulsory coursework (SL) is listed in the respective Degree Program and Examination Regulations for the module that includes your course, in the appendix “Module descriptions” under “Requirements for awarding credits”, usually also in the module handbook in the line of the same name.
How and when can I see how many students have registered for my exams?
As an instructor, you can log in to MARVIN and display the number of students registered for the exam (possible only on the university network/via VPN access):
Select “Course administrator decentralized” > Teaching organization > My courses and exams > Exams (LV-Verwalter/in dezentral > Lehrorganisation > Meine Veranstaltungen und Prüfungen > Prüfungen).
You can also use it to create participant lists and e-mail distribution lists to contact the participants. Please note:
1. If the examination registration period (GER) is still running, students can continue to register and deregister.
2. Sometimes for technical reasons minor subject students are not yet able to register. If this is the case, please refer such students to our FAQs. If participation is permitted in accordance with the StPO, they will then be registered as soon as possible (the majority by approx. one week after the registration deadline) and will appear on your registration lists.
3. Students earning the “Gender Certificate” cannot all register via MARVIN and therefore do not appear in their examination registration lists either.
4. Exchange students began appearing in your examination lists starting in winter semester 2024.How long must I retain written examination papers?
One year after the end of the semester in which the examination took place.
Term papers (HA) can be handed back to students earlier, in which case the obligation to retain it is transferred to the students (please have the handover certified).
What do I have to enter/communicate to whom (and by when) as a grade/exam result in MARVIN?
Who? As an instructor, you can independently enter the achievements of students who have taken an examination with you or have them entered by the main office applicable to you.
When? Since students can register only for the WH (retake) examination (> see deadlines and dates (GER)) if an entry has been made in MARVIN on the regular examination date regarding the failure to pass/failure to submit/failure to attend, it is important to make these entries in a timely fashion.
We therefore recommend reviewing written work as soon as possible after receipt and deciding whether a re-examination must be carried out due to failure (4 grade points or less). This also gives the student more time to prepare for the retake examination.
What? For work that has been submitted/passed on time:
“+” for passed, ungraded coursework/examination achievements
“-” for failed, ungraded coursework/examination achievements“5 to 15” for graded examinations passed
“0 to 4” for failed examinations
= If “0” points apply: Students can take the WH (retake) examination in the same semester. (failed attempt)“AT” if the examinee has demonstrably (e.g., with a medical certificate) withdrawn from the examination attempt for reasons beyond their control (e.g., illness)
= Students can take the WH (retake) examination in the same semester. (no failed attempt)“N.A.” = Students can only take the WH (retake) examination in the following semester (standard period of study may be delayed). (failed attempt)
Special case:
If the examinee wishes to withdraw from the examination BEFORE taking the examination, “RAN” can be entered; however, this automatically eliminates the possibility of taking the WH (retake) examination in the same semester (no failed attempt). If you are dealing with a case of plagiarism, please contact the examination board immediately (by e-mail to the Examination Office).

To do this, you need 1. a TAN list (see below) and 2. complete details of the examination; to obtain these from the examinees, we recommend that you have the completed sample cover sheet (docx) with the examination papers/compulsory coursework.
You can find instructions on how to enter data in MARVIN here:
- Log in to the ILIAS group “MARVIN Instructions" (GER) (if the link does not work, please enter via the MARVIN FAQs (GER)).
- Go to the course, then select “Instructions for examiners, instructors and examiner representatives”.Please enter the assessments under “Examination number” and not under “Courses”.
You can see which examination numbers are assigned to which modules and examinations in our overviews sorted by Degree Program and Examination Regulations.
Where can I get a TAN list for entering notes in MARVIN?
New here? Then you have probably already filled out the form for requesting your authorization in MARVIN and ticked the box indicating that you require a TAN list.
If not, you can request a TAN list via the Computing Centre (GER).
