Trial at the OLG Frankfurt against Stephan E. and Markus H. (2020)
On June 2, 2020, the main trial against Stephan E. and Markus H. began at the Higher Regional Court (OLG) Frankfurt, regarding the killing and aiding the killing of the Kassel regional president Dr. Walter Lübcke.
Stephan E. was accused of shooting Dr. Walter Lübcke during the night of June 1 to June 2, 2019. Furthermore, he was alleged to have stabbed a refugee from Iraq in Lohfelden in 2016 with intent to kill.
Markus H. was accused of aiding the killing of Dr. Walter Lübcke.
Stephan E. was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Dr. Walter Lübcke. The court classified the killing as treacherous and motivated by base reasons. Regarding the 2016 stabbing, the defendant was acquitted.
Markus H. was acquitted of the charge of aiding the killing. However, he was sentenced to one year and six months in prison for the unlawful possession of a key component of a fully automatic firearm.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trial Monitoring Programme was unable to fully observe the proceedings. The monitoring was conducted exclusively by students as part of the teaching activities of our project. We were forced to suspend documentation to ensure the safety of the students.
