Trial at the OLG Frankfurt against Walid D.

The defendant decided in autumn 2013 to travel to Syria to join the terrorist organization “ISIS,” renamed “IS” in 2014, as a fighter. In Syria, he remained on standby for deployment in combat. There is no conclusive evidence whether Walid D. actually participated in combat operations. In December 2018, Walid D. returned to Germany. The Federal Public Prosecutor charged Walid D. with membership in a foreign terrorist organization pursuant to §§ 129a (1) no. 1, 129a (2) no. 2, and 129b (2) StGB.

Following the verdict on September 17, 2019, Walid D. was also found guilty of supporting a terrorist organization abroad. Taking into account a prison sentence imposed by the Kassel Regional Court in 2015, a total sentence of two years and six months imprisonment was issued.
