Program: Nah- und Mitteloststudien (international) / Middle Eastern Studies (international)
Degree: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
Program length: 8 semesters / 4 years (240 ECTS points)
The objective of the four-year "Nah- und Mitteloststudien (international)/ Middle Eastern Studies (international)" Bachelor's program is to acquire broad fundamental knowledge of the countries of the Near and Middle East and to acquire expertise in one or more of the central trade or cultural languages of this region, supplemented by a one-year stay abroad in the region. Students will acquire a historical overview that grants them access to the region, in all of its diversity and dynamism, and qualifies them to allocate social, political and cultural processes and dynamics to greater contexts. This applies both for the historical depth of the 5,000-year cultural history and to present circumstances. Particularly as a result of a abroad, students will acquire internationality, intercultural expertise, linguistic and regional expertise.
In the Nah- und Mitteloststudien / Middle Eastern Studies Bachelor program, you may study the whole range of subjects or choose one of the two areas of specialization, which follow a permanently specified progression:
- Politics of the Near and Middle East
- Economy of the Near and Middle East
In general, the program provides you with a general overview of the region, in that you choose modules according to your interests from a wide-ranging course offering.
In addition, you can freely choose from a broad selection from the offerings of other programs, including those outside of the subject, so that you can create interdisciplinary approaches to the region.
The year abroad, which is completed in the third year of study, the 5th and 6th semesters, with 60 credit points (6 CP preparation and follow-up, 54 CP language and subject courses or local internship), counts toward the regular part of the 4-year BA in "Nah- und Mitteloststudien (international)/ Middle Eastern Studies (international)." This results in the longer study duration and the increased CP number. Graduates of the international BA program have the opportunity to study in a Master's program at the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS), the one-year Nah- und Mitteloststudien (Middle Eastern Studies) Master program.
Professional opportunities for graduates of the "Nah- und Mitteloststudien (international)/ Middle Eastern Studies (international)" Bachelor program can be particularly found in the fields of cultural mediation and intercultural training, cultural and scientific management, foundation work, political and entrepreneurial consulting, adult education, migration work, public service, media and tourism, language instruction, consulting and expert services, as well as the organization of international events and exhibitions.
