Certificate Program "Designing and Managing Research Projects" (EMF)

EMF logo

The continuing education program "Designing and Managing Research Projects" (Entwicklung und Management von Forschungsprojekten - EMF) is a collaborative project between Universität Kassel and Philipps-Universität Marburg that has been ongoing since 2008 and targets junior scholars from all faculties and disciplines of both participating universities who intend to apply for third-party funding in the near future. The goal of this offering is to convey the knowledge and skills necessary for junior scholars to receive appropriate funding for their own research and further develop their academic profile. The program ends with an internal evaluation of the participants' applications for third-party funding. A certificate attests that the participant has acquired the key skills required to successfully apply for and manage third-party-funded (research) projects. The three-year program consists of a two-year workshop phase and an additional year for submitting an application for third-party funding.

Structure of the Continuing Education Program

The program is composed of the following modules:

  • CC – Cross-Category Courses and Activities
  • PD – Project Design and Application
  • PM – Project Management
  • PR – Presentation of Research Projects
  • TR – Transfer

The workshops are organized into five modules that reflect the course of a third-party-funded project. They can be offered in German or English. Participants can attend courses and activities offered in Marburg (under the category of "EMF") and in Kassel. The five mandatory workshops are offered once a year under the same heading both in Kassel and in Marburg.

To acquire a certificate, the participants must complete a total of 200 hours of work/work units (WU).

  • This requires attendance of five mandatory workshops for skill acquisition (including the Introduction to the EMF Program) as well as one elective workshop from the Transfer module. These six workshops amount to a minimum workload of 68 WU.
  • Participants are also required to attend a reviewer session at which they are called upon to present their application for third-party funding (4 WU).
  • Furthermore, program participants must attend additional elective workshops in the maximum amount of 48 work units to reach the total amount of 120 WU.
  • Successful evaluation of the application for third-party funding at the reviewer session is credited with 80 WU.

For additional information, please consult the Regulations for the "Designing and Managing Research Projects" Continuing Education Program (PDF) and the Guidelines for the Evaluation of Applications for Third-Party Funding and the Proceedings of the Reviewer Sessions (PDF).

Modules, Mandatory and Elective Courses and Activities

Fees

For members and affiliates of the University of Kassel and for (associated) members of MArburg University Research Academy, the costs of attending the certificate program consist of a one-time registration fee in the amount of 200 EUR and the attendance fees for the individual courses and activities.

External participants pay a one-time registration fee in the amount of 500 EUR for the certificate program and the respective course and activities fees.

In Marburg, the attendance fee is usually 25 EUR per course day―or 50 EUR per course day in exceptional cases for particularly expensive courses―for EMF participants from the University of Kassel and (associated) members of MArburg University Research Academy. Half-day courses and activities are free of charge. For information on the course and activities fees in Kassel, please consult the University of Kassel's webpage on workshop costs.

Of course, the individual workshops can also be attended separately without acquiring the EMF certificate. In this case, the costs correspond with the usual attendance fees.
