Research

The scientific activities of the Institute focus on projects in the field of inflammation research. Our institute pursues the goal of basic research close to the clinic with application potential for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic options. The following disease patterns receive special attention:

  • Bronchial asthma and COPD as chronic inflammatory diseases of the lungs and airways
  • Atopic dermatitis and other atopy/allergy-related and associated diseases
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Sepsis
  • Multi-organ failure

The Institute has been involved in four major research projects for several years:

  1. DZL - the DZL is an association of 29 leading university and non-university institutions dedicated to research into respiratory diseases
  2. MIRACUM – these are ten universities with ten university hospitals (including Marburg), two universities of applied sciences and one industry partner, spread over seven federal states.  The focus is on the data integration centres, which will be embedded in the IT infrastructure of the hospitals and will facilitate the collection and exchange of data within the university hospitals of the consortium.
  3. NUM - the Network University Medicine (NUM) was founded in April 2020 as part of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis management. The aim of NUM is to better coordinate COVID 19 research activities at the all 36 university hospitals in Germany. Accordingly, the network bundles competencies, resources and research activities – including from the Marburg and Gießen sites.
  4. Clinic partnership Tanzania – The Faculty of Medicine at Philipps-Universität Marburg has maintained an intensive partnership with the Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania since 2018. To this end, the university participates in the initiative "Clinic Partnerships - Partners Strengthen Health" supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and in cooperation with the Else Kroener-Fresenius Foundation.

The Core Facility Medical Mass Spectrometry (CFMS), is part of the Faculty of Medicine (FB20) of the Philipps University Marburg and is located in the Institute of Laboratory Medicine (Central Laboratory) of the UKGM.
The CFMS offers a state-of-the-art infrastructure for chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis of the cellular metabolome on any biomedical questions as well as research into synthetically produced (bio-) molecules in therapeutic drug monitoring. Staff at the Core Facility offer support in project planning and carry out the analyses, including quality control, as a service.

Teaching

The Institute participates in the education of medical students, as well as in the Human Biology course of the Faculty of Medicine.

Scientific and medical doctoral students as well as Bachelor and Master students are regularly supervised at the Insitute. The spectrum of topics for graduate theses ranges from molecular biology to cell biology to clinical tasks.

In addition, in cooperation with the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), we offer a Master's programme in Emergency Medicine at KCMUCo in Moshi (Tanzania) -

Patient care

The Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiochemistry - Molecular Diagnostics of the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg, Marburg site, carries out the laboratory medical diagnostics of all patients who are treated as outpatients or inpatients at the hospital and also supports surrounding hospitals.

The Insitute has a main laboratory which is located in the main building at UKGM (level -1), offering a 24-hour service.

The institute offers a wide range of laboratory medical examination procedures and parameters.
These include:

Clinical chemistry, protein chemistry, haematology, endocrinology, immunology, metabolic diagnostics, urine diagnostics, liquor diagnostics, toxicology and drug screening, therapeutic drug monitoring, tumour markers, molecular diagnostics, infection diagnostics, allergy diagnostics, autoimmune diagnostics, immunological diagnostics, functional tests.

A total of approx. 4 million analyses are carried out each year.
