The objective of the modularized, four semester Geschichte / History Master's program is to expand historical knowledge in various fields of historical studies, non-exclusive, major topic immersion in a historical epoch and to perfect the application of scientific methods and discipline-specific working methods.
Major topics
Your personal, epoch-based major topic can be in:
- Ancient history
- Medieval history,
- Recent and modern history or
- Economic and social history.

The Marburg Geschichte / History Master's program has a decidedly research-oriented focus and also prepares you for a scholarly career path. Such an academic career path requires a doctorate following the master's degree.
Admission requirements
Required university degree Degree from a subject-relevant bachelor's program in the field of Historical, Social, Linguistic, Cultural, Legal or Economic Studies, Theology or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university diploma. At least 24 credit points in the area of historical disciplines and the related fundamental and ancillary studies must be certified.
The examination board can make admission contingent on additional academic performances and/or examination performances of 12 CP at maximum being produced. In this case, the program can be extended accordingly.

Other language Skills:- Skills in two foreign modern languages at Level B1 of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages", including English and optionally French, Italien or Spanish or
- English at Level Level B1 and Latin skills within the scope of the Latinum.
Functional Latin skills are defined as module prerequisites in some modules. Functional Latin skills enable the understanding of Latin texts using a dictionary, the verification of existing translations and subsequent interpretation of texts and content. They are certified by a corresponding endorsement of Latin skills within the scope of the so-called "Minor Latinum" or "(Major) Latinum" in the final grade certificate, a successfully passed examination following a source exercise of the Department of History and Cultural Studies which is explicitly identified for this purpose, or by a successfully passed examination carried out by the Department of Classical Philology following the Latin courses I and II. Comparable certification is acknowledged upon request.
