Description

The study program of the "Ethik / Ethics" subject in the Teaching in Secondary Schools program is oriented based on the requirements of the practice of teaching Ethics in secondary schools. The program imparts the subject-related and teaching-related principles for exercising the teaching profession in secondary schools and collects initial experiences in practical teaching in schools, following academic instruction.

The program qualifies students for academic work and for the socially responsible execution of the teaching profession based on the acquired expertise; that is, through knowledge, qualifications and perspectives.

The university education provides future teachers with professional qualifications in order to analyze, plan, design and reflect educational processes in Ethics instruction in schools.

Major topics

Students receive a systematic overview of the various ethical positions of the tradition, where particular emphasis is placed on Kantian philosophy and the philosophy of the Enlightenment.

There is also an introduction to Ethics-related studies, such as Sociology, Political Science, Religious Studies and Theology.

Furthermore, students have the option to specialize in a subject area. In doing so, they can benefit from activities that discuss ethics-related issues in the context of existing research.

Another study focus of the "Ethik / Ethics" subject is the area of teaching methodology, which is oriented by the guiding discipline of Philosophy at Marburg. It seeks to engage with the teaching methodologies of related instruction subjects (e.g. politics and economics, religion) and aims to contribute to preparing students for their later professional lives through cooperation with schools.

Objectives

Students who chose a subject as part of a teacher training program are normally aware of the professional prospects associated with this decision; namely, the goal of becoming a teacher.

If you should at some point decide not to become a teacher, however, there are alternatives. While no "professional field" as a whole can be cited for graduates of the "Ethik / Ethics" subject, there are areas in which you will compete with other humanities scholars and for which you will be more comprehensively and better equipped.

  • Adult education
  • Publishing – including textbook publishers, of course
  • Journalism
  • Philosophical consulting
  • Libraries and public administration (higher civil service)
