The Department of Islamic Studies (Islamwissenschaft) is pleased to announce the publication of Dr. Evgeniya Prusskaya’s new monograph, The French Campaign in Egypt (1798–1801): Facing the ‘Other’, published by Palgrave Macmillan (2025).

Dr. Evgeniya Prusskaya is a research fellow at the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS). Her work lies at the intersection of Islamic studies, imperial history, and cultural encounters, with a particular focus on the 18th and 19th centuries.

In this book, Dr. Prusskaya explores the cultural encounters and conflicts that emerged during the French occupation of Egypt, examining how this pivotal historical episode shaped mutual perceptions between European and Middle Eastern societies. Through a nuanced analysis of texts, images, and imperial narratives, the study contributes to our understanding of cross-cultural interaction, empire, and the construction of the “Other” in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
