26.05.2025 ENIS Spring School 2025 Begins on May 27 in Sousse, Tunisia

The Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM), in cooperation with the European Network for Islamic Studies (ENIS), is organizing the ENIS Spring School 2025 under the theme: "Imagining Futures: Dealing with Disparity". The event will take place from May 27 to June 1, 2025, at the University of Sousse, Tunisia.

The Spring School aligns with MECAM’s overarching research agenda and brings together MA students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers to explore how visions of the future are imagined and (re)negotiated within Muslim communities. These processes are addressed in the context of the profound disparities that shape societies—economically, politically, geographically, socially, in terms of gender, and through religious discourse and positioning.

Inspired by François Hartog’s concept of “régimes of historicity”, the school investigates how imaginations of the future are socially constructed and deeply intertwined with both lived realities and interpretations of the past.

We are proud to announce that the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) at Philipps-Universität Marburg will actively participate in the upcoming ENIS Spring School 2025 taking place from 27 to 30 May 2025 at the Université de Tunis, Tunisia.

The theme of this year’s Spring School is “Imagining Futures: Dealing with Disparity” — a timely exploration of how Muslim societies envision and negotiate their futures amid complex social, economic, political, and cultural disparities.

CNMS will contribute to this interdisciplinary dialogue by engaging with academic experts and researchers from around the world. Our own Professor Albrecht Fuess, a leading figure in Islamic Studies, will be one of the keynote speakers, sharing insights on the role of religion, history, and societal models in shaping future imaginaries.

This collaboration, supported by the European Network for Islamic Studies (ENIS) and the Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM), marks a significant step toward fostering academic exchange and deepening our understanding of contemporary Muslim communities’ challenges and aspirations.
