The Department of Islamic Studies at the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS), Philipps-Universität Marburg, congratulates Dr. Mehmood on the successful defense of his doctoral dissertation, titled “Sacred Screens and Subversive Voices: Cinematic Power and Dissent in Post-Revolutionary Iran”
The dissertation examines the different layers of film production in Iran which it quilifies as cinema of consent, cinema of dissent and humanist cinema..

The work contributes to current academic discussions about the role of film and cultural production in Iran in times of an authoritarian regime facing outward pressure.

The lively disputation took place at the CNMS in Marburg in the presence of colleagues, students, and guests.
