Gastvortrag: Noran Amin, "Drawing a New Egypt: How Comics and the Web Redefined Youth Culture"

Noran Amin is an Assistant Professor of English in the Department of English at Cairo University. Her research focuses on the dynamics of storytelling within the medium of comics, which she approaches as a global phenomenon that transcends national and cultural borders. Her work often investigates how comics converse with other storytelling media. Currently, she is conducting postdoctoral research through an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the University of Bamberg's Department of Arabic Studies. Her project, "Who am I? The (Re/De)Construction of the Egyptian Self in the Age of AI," examines the uncertainties surrounding identity definition and formation in an era of rapidly evolving digital and computerized realties. 
Her lecture will explore the rise of comics in Cairo as a creative outlet that allows readers and artists alike to "let out steam." It highlights the CairoComix Festival, held annually in November in Cairo, and examines how Egyptian youth engage with comics both online and offline. The talk also delves into the unique perceptions young Egyptians have of the medium, the major themes that have preoccupied creators over the past two decades, and concludes by reflecting on what makes Egyptian comics distinctly Egyptian. It will showcase examples of works by several successful comic creators and provide a concise analysis of how these works engage with their cultural, historical, and political contexts.
