In her open lecture, Prof. Beatrice de Graaf gives an insight to the question "What motivates terrorists?", on the basis of her latest research into religious, ideological attitudes amongst terrorist convicts and inmates in the Netherlands and Indonesia. Based on these findings, and her previous research into the history of terrorism and counterterrorism, Prof. De Graaf offers a new lense to study the religion/ideology/violence connection, namely the concept of ‘radical redemption’. Prof. de Graaf is Distinguished Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University, and holds the Chair of History of International Relations & Global Governance there. She was co-founder of the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism at Leiden University and contributed to the emerging research field of security history. Her latest book Fighting Terror After Napoleon came out in November 2020, with Cambridge University Press. A previous book, Evaluating Counterterrorism Performance (2011), was internationally ranked amongst the top 150 terrorism books (Perspectives on Terrorism). Prof. de Graaf participates in international and national (scholarly) debates on terrorism and security, and frequently comments on matters of terrorism and security in the printed and broadcasted media. She was awarded the highest academic distinction in the Netherlands in 2018, with the Stevin Prize (NWO), is member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and with an ERC consolidator grant has set up a research network ‘SECURE. The emergence of security cultures in Europe and beyond’.
