06.08.2025 Call for Sino-German Research Proposals: "Intelligent Numerical Mathematics" (NSFC-DFG 2025 iNum)

The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) are continuing their successful cooperation by supporting joint Sino-German research projects in the field of Intelligent Numerical Mathematics (iNum). The call aims to foster innovative collaborations that combine numerical mathematics with machine learning approaches, bringing together excellent researchers from both countries.

The DFG (German Research Foundation) and the NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) have launched a joint call for proposals in the field of Intelligent Numerical Mathematics (iNum). This initiative supports collaborative projects between researchers in Germany and China, combining numerical methods and learning-based approaches in areas such as model reduction, solver optimization, parallelization strategies, and numerically efficient machine learning.

Key points:

  • Funding period: up to 3 years.
  • Proposals must demonstrate strong bilateral collaboration and a clear scientific benefit.
  • Focus on learning-based numerics and numerically efficient learning.
  • Please note that the documents submitted to the DFG and the NSFC must not differ with regard to the scientific content of the proposal or with regard to the applicants involved.  The proposal must include a description of the full proposed research programme and research team, and describe the total resources for the joint project (i. e. the funds requested for both the Chinese and German groups).
  • Open access to data and code in line with scientific standards is expected.
  •  Chinese principal investigators (PIs) submit their documents to the NSFC.
  • German PIs must apply via DFG's elan portal.
  • Funding decisions will be made by May 2026.

Deadlines:

  • Proposals must be submitted in English to DFG by 30 October 2025.
  • Registration in elan must be completed by 23 October 2025 (if submitting for the first time).

More information and templates are available on the DFG and NSFC websites.
