02.09.2025 New Publication: Recommendations for Sustainable Collaboration with China
How can German research institutions ensure successful and secure collaboration with partners in China despite growing geopolitical challenges? A new paper from the ASK project (Awareness, Security and Knowledge in International Collaboration) provides answers.
The recommendations are based on the workshop “Making China-Collaboration Sustainable” (Potsdam, 6–7 February 2025) and highlight the importance of stronger synergies between science and administration. Among the key takeaways are:
- Structured communication between researchers and administrative staff to align goals and improve compliance.
- China-competence as an institutional resource, including knowledge of Chinese research culture and regulatory frameworks.
- Awareness of dual-use risks and the establishment of transparent processes to assess and manage them.
The paper underscores that decoupling from Chinese partners is not a viable option for German and European science. Instead, sustainable collaboration requires mutual trust, clear structures, and continuous dialogue between all stakeholders.
