GIGA China Series: "China Watchers"

When Western audiences seek to understand politics in the People's Republic of China, they often turn to specialists, known as "China Watchers." But who are these experts, and how do they form their conclusions?

A global list of over 2,200 nominated China Watchers was compiled through a snowball nomination process. While these experts often form local sub-communities based on geography, there are also notable cross-country connections that create a global network. The research indicates that US-based male academics continue to dominate this community, though younger members are becoming more diverse in terms of education, gender, and location.
