The Basics of Science Communication

Working in Science is great, but how can you explain this to others? What do you tell media representatives, other young scientists, lay persons or politicians about your work? Which kind of communication is best for your own issues? And how can you elaborate your own communication profile?
This module introduces to the basics of (good) science communication.

Intended Learning Outcomes

You will,

  • Receive an introduction to media work: With which topics and methods can you attract attention? What do media professionals pay attention to?
  • Get a brief overview of the different channels of science communication and how to use them profitably. This ranges from the classic print media and broadcasting, to the most common online services and social media channels,
  • Learn how professionals set up a communication concept,
  • Receive ideas for customized measures for your own topics and interests,
  • Find out who and what can support you in your science communication and, last but not least,
  • Discuss the demand for (ethical) good science communication.

Didactic Methods

Trainer input, plenary discussion, and group work.
We will work on the example of your own topics.

Requirements

  • Interest in Science Communication. :)
  • Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.
  • To participate in the online course you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome or Firefox) as well as a headset (or speakers and microphone), a webcam plus a stable internet connection.

Please register until November 10, 2022 using the online registration form.

Please note that your registration is binding. You may cancel your registration up to twelve days before the beginning of the course without providing specific reasons. Thereafter, you will be required to pay the attendance fee even if you do not attend the course. In the case of cancellation , please send us a brief notice so that we can make your place available to someone else on the waiting list.
