  • Research Project

In his dissertation project “Resistance, Religion, and Recreation in Arabic Rap after 2011”, Igor Johannsen (who has been employed at the Research Network since October 2013) is investigating the practices of Arabic hip-hop culture since the Arab Spring. Because of the form and the normative substance of these practices, used by the hip-hop community as a medium for commentary and critique, an analysis of the lyrical material allows for conclusions to be made that assess the events and discourse of the artists’ social and political environment. The post-Arab Spring cultural products of hip-hop trace a narrative that can’t be learned through official historiography, traditional media, or analyses of so-called “high” culture products (opera, ballet, classical music).
