Perspectives

Are you interested in the M.Sc. Mathematics program and wondering what you can do with the degree? Or you are already close to graduation and wonder what now? Below you will find information about career prospects.

  • Qualifications

    Key Qualifications

In addition to your professional qualifications, you will also learn how to work on difficult questions scientifically, both independently and in a team. You will be able to plan larger projects over a longer period of time and complete them on schedule. You can then present your results professionally and adapted to your target group.

You have also learned to assess yourself: how well can you work under time pressure and organize yourself? What are your strengths, what are your weaknesses? This knowledge will help you and your future employers or business partners.

Modeling and solution of concrete questions

At the end of your master's degree you can say the following about yourself:

I know a large number of different mathematical fields and structures. In these fields, I have also gained experience in dealing with these structures and abstractions through my own work. This enables me to quickly model specific problems and then solve them. Where the problem proves difficult, I am able to quickly absorb new information from the existing literature and use it to solve my problem.

    Optimization of questions

During your studies, you will learn through constant practice to quickly recognize the difficulty and possibly unsolvability of your problem. You will soon be able, through targeted improvements to the problem, to transform it into easier or solvable problems, or to split the problem into several small problems.

    Profile Area

By taking a profile area of your choice, you will acquire basic or advanced knowledge in another scientific discipline. You will recognize the differences and similarities in the approach to problems and problem solutions in the various scientific fields. This will expand your range of skills in your later professional life.

  • Fields of Activity

    Versatility

Your later job will hardly be about mathematics in the university sense. Instead, your analytical skills will be required in professional life. This opens up a wide range of possible jobs for you. Conversely, the fields of activity for mathematicians are too complex for you to be prepared for them during your studies.

Computer scientists with a master's degree continue to be sought-after employees. In recent years, many of our graduates have reached leading positions in larger companies or have successfully participated in company start-ups.

    Classic areas of application

The classic areas of application for mathematicians are banks and insurance companies, consulting firms, economics, in schools and in university and industrial research. There are also many other areas such as meteorology, logistics, image processing, security technology, IT and marketing.

    Very good employment opportunities

A successfully completed master's degree in mathematics in Marburg ensures you excellent job prospects in industry and business. Anyone who writes more than 5-6 applications after graduation is already above the average for applications that master's students have to write after graduation before they have found a job. In most cases, you can choose your employer.

    Freelance

The independent work, the necessary self-organization and the perseverance that you have learned in the master's degree will also enable you to become self-employed. This also includes recognizing, evaluating and subsequently using market niches.

  • Doctorate

Not only if you are interested in an academic career, but especially if you enjoy scientific work, you should consider a doctorate.

It is advantageous if you can continue working in the field of your master's thesis. However, it is also no problem to choose a new field of work for your doctoral thesis. If you are interested in a doctorate, it is best to contact the professor whose field of work interests you the most.
